If you are unhappy with the condition of your skin, this article will provide you with the facts about skin needling with PRP and explain how it can stimulate your own body’s natural processes to speed up skin repair, rejuvenate skin tone and texture, and fight back against facial ageing.
The mission of our practice has remained unchanged since we first opened our doors:
We don’t just treat the problem. We treat the person.
Skin needling with platelet-rich plasma and other rejuvenation services at FBW are designed to help people rejuvenate their appearance and maintain their health, too. Our medical and aesthetic team, including our highly trained laser operators and nurse injectors, take pride in their ability to care for women inside and out.
In an era of pop-up beauty treatment kiosks and walk-in medispas, this is not always the case. While they may be well intentioned, many people that provide health and beauty services are simply not qualified. The results for unsuspecting consumers can range from dissatisfaction to disfigurement.
Our goal is to provide customised health and beauty services. To do that effectively, we take time to get to know our patients as completely unique individuals. We take a comprehensive medical history from each patient, but we don’t stop there. We also ask about our patients’ lifestyles, emotional state, and more.
Armed with knowledge (rather than a sales sheet), the experts at FBW diagnose skin problems and recommend individualised treatment plans that carry the lowest risk of complications while delivering the highest rate of success.
Skin needling, also referred to as CIT (collagen induction therapy), is a popular and proven skin rejuvenation treatment. There are a variety of tools used for needling, including rollers and pens. The microscopic needles create tiny pinpoint puncture wounds in the skin.
Skin needling can be used on nearly all parts of the body. At FBW, our patients are most interested in skin rejuvenation for the
In a completely natural process, the body reacts to the wounds by releasing growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Stimulating collagen is a huge boost for skin beauty. Our collagen resources become depleted as we age, and without collagen, the skin loses volume and youthful plumpness.
The treatment also creates a series of channels useful for infusing therapeutic serums deep into the skin. The addition of platelet-rich plasma takes this skin rejuvenation technique to a whole new level.
Platelet rich plasma is blood that has been processed so all that remains is concentrated and enriched platelets. PRP contains growth factors that encourage the skin to heal itself and promote new cell growth. At FBW, we add PRP to our micro-needling treatments, allowing the platelet rich plasma to go deep into the dermis where it can work most effectively.
Skin needling with the addition of PRP has been used clinically for skin rejuvenation for decades. The overall result is younger-looking skin with fewer visible signs of facial ageing. It is outstanding in the treatment and improvement of
- Mild to moderate acne scarring
- Traumatic scars
- Hyperpigmentation, dark spots, melasma
- Under eye wrinkles and loose skin
- Moderate skin laxity
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Thinning hair
- Skin texture and pore size
- Stretch marks
- Hair regrowth
- Skincare product delivery
An obvious advantage of this treatment is the fact that the epidermis, the protective outer layer of the skin, is preserved. For people seeking a natural way to enjoy younger-looking skin at any age, skin needling with PRP is a perfect answer. There is nothing more natural than using your own blood to heal and make a better looking you.
Women at FBW are understandably focused on the outstanding results provided by skin needling with PRP. Our aesthetic experts are equally focused on the science behind the treatment to ensure that it is safe and effective. The good news is that skin needling with PRP has been used successfully in aesthetic medicine in Australia and around the globe for many years.
The secret is the platelet.
Platelets are foundational in many of the body’s functions, especially where the skin is concerned. Our doctors value the use of platelet-rich plasma with skin needling because it
- Promotes tissue regeneration and rejuvenation.
- Increases collagen production.
- Serves as a “biological glue” promoting tissue adhesion, especially in skin flaps, bone grafts, and trauma.
- Recruits other cells to the site of injury.
- Initiates vascular in-growth, strengthening veins.
- Induces cell differentiation.
- Promotes bone mineralisation.
- Aids in extra-cellular matrix formation.
- Is non-allergenic.
- Eliminates donor transmissible infections.
At FBW, our women’s health and beauty experts consider platelet-rich plasma the ultimate “body’s own” physiological product. Because it comes from the patient herself, it is safer and more natural than animal-derived or human-donated products.
Skin needling with PRP for facial rejuvenation is an appropriate treatment for almost anyone. It is also a treatment with minimal side effects. Good general health, a positive attitude, and realistic expectations are the main ingredients for success. PRP is especially useful for candidates with darker skin.
Micro-needling with PRP is not recommended for people who
- Have skin cancer
- Have liver disorders
- Have problems with blood clotting
During your consultation at FBW, your doctor will talk with you to ensure that skin needling with PRP will help you safely achieve your facial rejuvenation goals.
FBW works as a team, with one another and with our patients. To ensure the best possible outcomes, we provide patients for skin needling with PRP with a fact sheet to help them prepare for the treatment.
On the “do” list:
- Stay hydrated – Drink extra water in the days leading up to your appointment. Your skin may feel extra dry after the treatment, so keep up your water intake in the days after skin needling, too.
- Take arnica tablets – Arnica is commonly sold commercially in tablet or cream form. Arnica tablets have been widely used as supplementary homeopathic treatments for bruises, strains and sprains, for pre- and post-operative care, for muscular pain, and for shock and trauma. They can be found at health stores and chemists.
On the “don’t” list are lifestyle changes that should be made 5-7 days before skin needling with PRP to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. At that time, patients should stop taking
- Supplements that increase bruising and bleeding
- Green Tea
- Omegas (Fish Oils)
- Evening Primrose oil
- St John’s wort
- Vitamin E
When you arrive at our practice on the day of your appointment, you’ll be greeted by our warm and welcoming staff. They’ll make you feel at ease right away. After some preliminary paperwork, you’ll be taken to a comfortable treatment room where the magic begins.
You’ll be asked to provide a blood sample. This blood is immediately placed in a centrifuge. When centrifugation is complete, your blood is separated into three layers:
Red blood cells
Platelet’s and white blood cells
Next, your skin will be numbed with a topical cream. When you are relaxed and ready to go, your skincare specialist will use a handheld skin-needling device to create hundreds of tiny channels in the skin. Then, in order to help speed and intensify the repair and rejuvenation of your skin, we inject and apply your own processed serum, or “PRP”, to your skin.
The high-speed motor causes the needle penetration to occur very quickly, which means it will feel more like a sandpaper sensation than needles. Some patients describe it as similar to the feel of a cat’s tongue.
It’s important to know that scar treatments require longer needles, which invade “nerve space” and may produce more sensation. Don’t be concerned. Our experienced aestheticians will ensure that your skin is numbed and that you are comfortable throughout the treatment.
Results are not instantaneous. Swelling from the plasma is what you will see and feel first. Once this has subsided, very little change will initially be visible. Over a few weeks the platelets will stimulate the growth factors, which will assist in more collagen growth. Ongoing improvement in the skin can be observed up to 12 months after each treatment, depending on the rate the patient produces collagen.
The number of treatments needed for full facial rejuvenation will depend upon the health and age of your skin. Normally, we recommend two or three treatments, four to six weeks apart.
Following their skin rejuvenation treatment, most people experience some mild swelling for a day and redness for 3 to 5 days after the treatment. The redness can usually be covered by makeup, and most patients return to work straight after the treatment.
Bruising is possible, but mostly the bruising is mild. Duration of bruising varies with individuals, but is rarely more than a week. Although patients may experience some mild discomfort during the treatment, there is no pain after the PRP treatment.
Skin needling is a superficial process, and therefore few risks and complications exist. Furthermore, as platelet-rich plasma comes from a patient’s own body, it is likely to be easily tolerated. That being said, skin needling with PRP can lead to:
- Change in skin pigmentation (loss or increase)
- Skin infection
- Bleeding at injection site
At FBW, skin needling with PRP for skin rejuvenation is customised to each woman and her goals. Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year, to achieve optimal results. Others are best served by a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-ageing, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.
When you consult with a specialist at FBW, you will be given a complete picture of your treatment, including costs.
